PhD scholarship applications available in over 150 STEM-related research projects

PhD research scholarships are available in a range of areas including, chemical, biological, civil, environmental, resources, electrical, computer systems, biomedical, materials science, mechanical, aerospace, robotics and mechatronics.

PhD and Masters by Research scholarship opportunities are currently available with leading researchers who are involved in pioneering STEM research across different research themes. There are over 150 research projects available to choose from. We offer generous scholarships of AU$33K to support you during your PhD or research masters so you can focus on what’s important.

PhD program at Monash Engineering
A PhD in engineering requires you to complete a research thesis of up to 80,000 words (or alternative approved outputs). Duration is 3-4 years full time. The PhD program may be undertaken in the principal areas of research, including:
- Chemical and biological engineering
- Civil, environmental and resources engineering
- Electrical and computer systems engineering
- Materials science and engineering
- Mechanical, aerospace, robotics and mechatronics engineering
As well as the research component, you will also complete a series of professional development activities or coursework units relevant to your chosen research focus. These activities are designed to provide you with the skills needed to develop your professional skills to support you in your future career.
Application dates: There are 4 scholarship rounds per year:
- International applicants: Round 1 closes March 31st, Round 2 closes August 31st.
- Domestic (Aus + NZ) applicants : Round 1 closes May 31st, Round 2 closes October 31st.
Application requirements
Eligibility:
- Applicants will need to hold a first-class honours degree from an Australian University or an equivalent degree from an overseas university in a relevant discipline.
- Applicants must show excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to conduct self-motivated research.
- Applicants must also satisfy Monash’s English Language Proficiency requirements.

Monash Engineering is seeking high calibre engineering students to take part in our graduate research degrees. Your application will be looked upon favourably if you:
- Graduated in the top 10% of your year level
- Graduated from a well ranked university
- Have authored peer-reviewed research publications
- Possess excellent written and verbal English skills
- Scored well in a national graduate entrance exam
2. Find a supervisor
A Monash Engineering research degree can be completed in any field of research where sufficient expertise and resources are available. You need to investigate the many research areas within the faculty and identify supervisors that are working in your field of interest.

3. Submit an expression of interest
Once you have identified a supervisor in the research area of your choice, please complete the Expression of Interest(EOI) form. This form will be forwarded to your nominated supervisor for assessment and you may be requested to attend an interview.
As part of the online EOI application, you will need to submit copies of the following documents (where applicable):
- Official academic transcripts (tertiary level only) including grading scale and evidence of completion
- Q1 or Q2 1st or 2nd author publications. Conference papers can also be uploaded
- CV/resume, including publication record
- Evidence of satisfying English language requirements
- Current residency status
- Evidence of any scholarship currently receiving
* Please note: These documents will be used for an initial assessment and you will need to re-submit copies of these documents, along with other additional documents, should you be given the opportunity to proceed with a formal application.
4. Obtain an invitation to apply
If after assessing your Expression of Interest the potential supervisor has the suitable resources and expertise to take you on as a graduate research student, you will be supplied with an Invitation to Apply.
Please bear in mind that academic and administrative staff receive a high volume of enquiries from potential students and it may take up to four weeks to receive a response.
All applicants are required to upload a copy of their invitation to apply with their formal application. Applications without this will not be considered.
